Source Books
How Source Filtering Works
All game data (races, classes, spells, items, feats, languages…) comes from D&D 5e source books. Source filtering controls which content is offered during character creation and on the sheet. Books are enabled per ruleset in the Rulesets workbench's Source Books category; individual entries can then be allowed or denied on top of that (see Rulesets).
Default Source Set
New accounts and new campaigns start with a curated set of books: Player's Handbook, Dungeon Master's Guide, Sword Coast Adventurer's Guide, Volo's Guide to Monsters, Xanathar's Guide to Everything, Mordenkainen's Tome of Foes, Tasha's Cauldron of Everything, Van Richten's Guide to Ravenloft, Explorer's Guide to Wildemount, the Elemental Evil Player's Companion, and Critical Role. Change the set any time in the workbench; existing accounts and campaigns keep their own picks.
Personal Source Preferences
Your personal ruleset governs campaignless characters. Edit it in the workbench with "My ruleset" selected — books, and single-entry allows and denies alike. An account with no preferences saved falls back to the default set above.
Campaign Source Filtering
Characters assigned to a campaign use the campaign's ruleset, configured by the DM in the workbench. Players can see the approved list from the public source list linked on the campaign's Overview tab, with overrides grouped as included or excluded.
Deduplication
When several books print the same name (Common is printed six times), player-facing pickers show one entry: the printing from the highest-priority source. The default order is PHB, MPMM, VGM, MTF, XGE, TCE, SCAG, DMG, ERLW, EGW, MOT, VRGR, FTD, SCC, GGR, BGG, BMT, with unlisted books after those. A Prefer pin in the workbench overrides that for a single name, and banning any printing of a name bans the name.
Available Source Books
Well over a hundred books are registered from the 5e.tools dataset — every source the imported content references — all from the 2014 edition (the 2024 revision sources such as XPHB and XDMG are excluded). The workbench lists them with their year and an edition facet. Critical Role (code CR) is a regular book holding the Blood Hunter class and its subclasses; it is in the default set, so switch it off if your table doesn't use it.
